WEEK 5 RANKINGS

Designer (14).jpeg

Our first month of the season is complete and the week ended with a bang! Most of the games were already decided after the completion of the Sunday Night Game, but two contests were still up in the air pending the outcome of the Lions/Seahawks game.

The Peeping Tomlins held a 26-point lead going into the MNF game and Stick Rock had Geno Smith starting at QB. It was a high scoring game throughout and Detroit could not stop the Seattle offense at all in the 2nd half. The Seahawks had two pass receptions early in the game where the receiver was stopped at the goal line and then proceeded to run the ball in for the easy TD, so Stick Rock looked like they would fall short. But Seattle got the ball back in the 2:00 minute offense with the Tomlins leading by only 4-points.  Smith proceeded to march down the field and pulled within in half a point. All Rocky needed was either a 6-yard rush from his QB or a 5 yard pass that would have pushed Smith's Pass Yards to 400. And with less than a minute to go, Geno... threw a pick. Stick Rock lost by 2.5 points and Jared stays in a tie for 1st place.

In the second game, Dark Helmet had a 28-point lead on The Ghostbusters, who had Amon Ra St Brown and Sam LaPorta yet to play. The game script was not co-operating for the Ghostbusters as the Lions Offense was content to stick with the ground game in the 1st half. It got worse as Detroit only threw 4 passes in the 2nd half up until their final possession. But with the Ghostbusters down 4 pts with 3:30 to go, Jared Goff found St. Brown on the edge of the end zone for a TD Pass. Game over - Ghostbusters win.

Hopefully this will be a springboard to more scoring in what had been a slow start for fantasy teams in 2024. It looks like the passing games are starting to heat up as offenses around the league begin to click. Unfortunately, Week 5 is also the beginning of Bye Weeks in the NFL. This is where each team's roster depth will be tested. Be sure to check your lineups and hit the waiver wire to find replacements for any player on a bye.

Now on to our rankings:

1 (Tie). Mel Kipers Best Available (Last Week #1)

MKBA took their first loss of the season as Wrath of Kahn put a whooping on them. Unfortunately, injuries (both direct and indirect) are taking a toll on Pete's team. The direct impact was a possible ACL injury sidelined Rashee Rice (0 points) early on and indirectly - the Tua injury in Miami has rendered any offensive player in their lineup useless (Achane - 5 points). The QB Duo of Jackson (27) and Daniels (26) kept things closer than they should have been.

1 (Tie). Peeping Tomlin's (Last Week #5 Tie)

The online league analyzers do not like this team very much, but all they do is score points. As mentioned above, they had to sweat out the Monday Night Game, but they did manage to score 174 points. Justin Fields (33), Nico Cillins (33) and Dak Prescott (21) led a balanced attack as the Tomlins maintain a share of 1st place in the Adams Division.

3. Stick Rock (Last Week #4)

And here we have the tough-luck team of 2024. Rocky has the highest scoring team in the league, but only one win to show for it. In their 3 losses this season, they have scored 162, 145 and 172 points. And things won't get easier this week as they go up against MKBA. CJ Stroud (27), Alvin Kamara (24), and Geno Smith (23) led a balanced scoring attack.

4. Ghostbusters (Last Week #2)

And here is the Ying to Rocky's Yang. The most fortunate team of 2024. For some reason this team cannot score. In Week 1 they had the 2nd lowest score and won and in Week 4 they had the 4th lowest score and managed a victory. Joe Burrow (21), Amon-Ra St Brown (22) and Ja'Marr Chase (19) provided just enough scoring for the win.

5. Dark Helmet (Last Week # 3)

A tough luck loss for Helmet this week as detailed above was due in part to the ineffectiveness of their QBs. Neither Daniel Jones (9) nor Bo Nix (8) were able to crack double digit scoring this week. D'Andre Swift (29) was the only player who managed to score at least 20 points.

6. Skoal Bandits (Last Week # 7)

The Bandits won their Week 4 matchup easily as they already had the game clinched before David Montgomery and the Dolphins D/ST took the field on Monday Night. The unlikely QB duo of Baker Mayfield (32) and Sam Darnold (26) continue to lead this team while Mike Evans (23) continues to be the most reliable WR in Fantasy Football.

7. Springfield Flanders (Last Week #5 Tie)

Flanders uneven season continues with a dud of a week against the Bandits. Trevor Lawrence (18), Terry McLaurin (18) and Aaron Jones (17) led a lethargic attack. I have a tip for Mr. Spoto. If there is a team (in this case Jacksonville) that when you are deciding which D/ST to pick up and you look to see if they are the opponent, you probably should not be using two offensive players from said team in your lineup each week. The Trevor Lawrence/Travis Etienne duo is killing this offense.

8. Wrath of Khan (Last Week #9)

Look who is creeping up the rankings. After debuting as the #10 team after the draft, Kahn has slowly increased his scoring each week (100-123-132) culminating in a 168-point explosion in Week 4! Derrick Henry (38), Jordan Mason (25) and Brian Robinson Jr (21) were a formidable RB trio this week, but if Jim hopes to contend, he'll need to get more reliable QB play going forward. The Travis Kelce (15) resurgence should be reassuring.

9. '69 Olds (Last Week #8)

'69 Olds did just enough this week to win a game against a gutted opponent. The 49ers D/ST (23) led the scoring this week, but QBs Jalen Hurts (18) and Patrick Mahomes (16) need to figure things out if they want to win with any consistency. I think it may be time for an intervention here. Ray. You need to trade one of the QBs to get more consistent RB/WR play. Also, it is never a good idea to have three players (JSN/DK Metcalf/KWIII) from the same NFL team. Reach out to Dan, Jim or Glenn to see if you can shake up that roster a bit.
