2023 KEEPER UPDATE

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

We are 2 weeks from our Keeper Deadline (August 28th, 11 PM). It looks like everyone has made their keeper selections, but you still have 14 days to change your mind. Injuries, free agent signings, trades and QB competitions could change your perspective as the preseason plays out.

2023 KEEPER PREVIEW

The following is a review of each team’s keepers as of Sunday August 13th. This listing is based on last year’s final standings.

1. Stick Rock – (Last Year’s record 7-6) Yeah, nobody likes it. He won the championship because Dan thought it would be a good idea to drop Daniel Jones for Aaron Rodgers and now we have to live with Rocky being a 2X Champ.

Keepers: Austinn Ekeler/Justin Jefferson/Joe Burrow/St. Brown

Other Notable Players: Evan Engram/Aaron Jones

Commissioners take: Some injury concern with Burrows, but the 4 keepers are automatic. Evan Engram could be an interesting 5th round pick for some teams.

2. Dark Helmet – (9-4). Last year’s bone-headed roster management aside, Dan went all-in and kept nobody and rode that success to the Championship Game.

Keepers: Aaron Rodgers/Saquon Barkley/Josh Jacobs/Tua

Other Notable Players: Alvin Kamara/Tee Higgins/Kyle Pitts

Commissioners Take: A lot of uncertainty here. Can Tua and Saquon stay healthy? Are Aaron Rodgers and the Jets going to be good? Can Jacobs continue carrying such a heavy workload? I would go with Barkley/Jacobs/Pitts/Higgins. If Higgins was good enough for Magnum PI, he can play on my team.

3. Peeping Tomlins – (7-6) After a slow start to begin the season, the rookies (Chris Olave, London and Kenny Walker III) got hot and led Jared to a playoff spot.

Keepers: Joe Mixon/Nick Chubb/Kenny Walker III/Devonta Smith

Other Notable Players: Geno Smith/Keenan Allen/Chris Olave

Commissioners Take: I am not a big fan of keeping three RBs. You’re never going to start one in the flex, so you are basically wasting a keeper slot on a bench player. Trade for a WR or QB. I would keep Mixon/Walker/Olave/D. Smith

4. ’69 Olds – (8-5) Ray pulled off the impossible last year when he took a team that was led by Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Cooper Kupp and Dalvin Cook and failed to win a playoff game. That is not easy to do. Ray is looking to change things up this year by throwing injury-prone Kupp and free agent Cook back and for now just rolling with the 2 QBs as keepers.

Keepers: Patrick Mahomes/Jalen Hurts

Other Notable Players: Dalvin Cook/Cooper Kupp/Alexander Mattison

Commissioners Take: I’m not sure if it is an oversight, but you have to keep Kupp. At the very least, shop him around and see what you can get in a trade.

5. Black Ghostbusters (9-4) A strong won/loss record, but a low point total left the Ghostbusters 20-points short of playoff spot in 2023. Failure to find a playable Quarterback for most of the season cost them dearly.

Keepers: Trevor Lawrence/Tony Pollard/Davante Adams/Travis Kelce

Other Notable Players: Jonathan Taylor/Daniel Jones/Breece Hall

Commissioners Take: Might have had some extra keepers to trade, but injury risks to Taylor, Hall and Adams could prevent that from happening.

6. Wrath of Kahn (7-6) Lack of depth hurt this team last year. Justin Herbert was slowed by injury and Russell Wilson was a bust. Justin Fields had a strong 2nd half that gave Jimmy some late playoff life, but unfortunately Wrath ran out of time and finished out of the money.

Keepers: Justin Herbert/Justin Fields/Tyreek Hill

Other Notable Players: Deebo Samuel/Russell Wilson

Commissioners Take: I would keep Deebo in addition to the other 3.

7. Milford Football Team (6-7) This team dealt with injuries all season long and could never gain any traction in 2022. They’ll need to find some WR help his year to be competitive.

Keepers: Josh Allen/Mike Andrews/Garrett Wilson/CMC

Other Notable Players: Isaiah Pacheco/DK Metcalf/Travis Etienne

Commissioners Take: Deep roster, but that doesn’t change who the keepers should be. Allen/Andrews/Wilson/CMC is the way to go.

8. Springfield Flanders (6-7) Poor QB play and uneven rookie performances at RB led to a disappointing season for Flanders. They’ll lean heavily on their WR trio in 2023 with hopes to get back to the championship game.

Keepers: Najee Harris/AJ Brown/JaMaar Chase/Stephon Diggs

Other Notable Players: DeShaun Watson/Dameon Pierce

Commissioners Take: I don’t like the 3 WR keepers. Talk to Jared to see if you can do a RB for WR swap.

9. Mel Kiper’s BA (4-9) Injuries have followed this team for three seasons now. Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott missed big chunks of last season and sunk this team from the start.

Keepers: Lamar Jackson/Derrick Henry/Ceedee Lamb/Jaylen Waddle

Other Notable Players: Dak Prescott/DJ Moore/Darren Waller

Commissioners Take: Maybe Waller for Waddle, but I wouldn’t change anything. Keep the 4 that you have.

10. Skoal Bandits (2-11) Speaking of sunk teams, the Bandits were the only team that was officially eliminated from the playoffs before the draft even started. A quick reminder of last year’s keeper debacle: Matt Stafford – Hurt and terrible. Zeke Elliot – Slow and Old. Kyler Murray – hurt and lazy. Kittle – hurt. Craig’s season was over before he drafted a single player.

Keepers: None

Other Notable Players: None

Commissioners Take: A complete redo is just what this team needs.
